Black Child Development Institute of Greensboro, Inc. (BCDI-G) has a rich history rooted in the tireless advocacy and dedication of its founder, Sarah Walden Herbin.

Sarah Walden Herbin

In 1979, Sarah Walden Herbin, a Greensboro resident, learned of 36 African American children at risk of repeating the school year in what was then known as Greensboro City Schools. Fueled by her passion for children’s education, Mrs. Herbin rallied her friends with a powerful question: “Who If Not Us, Will Advocate for Our Children?” Together, they provided free educational tutoring and support for these children over the summer, ensuring they were prepared to move to the next grade level by the beginning of the school year. Despite their readiness, the school system initially refused to promote them. Undeterred, Mrs. Herbin and the families organized and advocated for the children’s enrollment in appropriate grades, ultimately succeeding. This pivotal moment marked the birth of BCDI-G.

June Swanston Valdes

The organization’s dedication to education and advocacy was furthered by June Swanston-Valdes, who led the charge as Executive Director. Mrs. Swanston-Valdes, a passionate advocate for children, brought her expertise and commitment to BCDI-G. Under her leadership, the organization flourished, implementing programs like the “Each One, Reach One” tutoring initiative, which evolved into the Spirit of Excellence tutoring program. For 24 years, Mrs. Swanston-Valdes spearheaded efforts to narrow the academic achievement gap and reignite the spirit of volunteerism in the community.

Since its inception, BCDI-G has remained steadfast in its commitment to Mrs. Herbin’s call to action, striving to improve the lives of children, youth, and families in the Greater Greensboro community.

Together, the legacies of Sarah Walden Herbin and June Swanston-Valdes continue to inspire BCDI-G’s mission. With unwavering support, the organization remains committed to making a difference in the lives of children, youth, and families in the Greater Greensboro community, carrying forward the vision and passion of its founders.
