Honoring the Legacy, Building the Future
This story didn’t start today. It began in the late 1970s when Sarah Walden Herbin saw what too many others ignored: Black children weren’t being given what they needed to succeed. So she stepped in. With community support, BCDI-Greensboro was born. Not flashy. Not loud. Just consistent work that centered Black families and their children.
We’ve been doing that work for 45 years. No shortcuts. No chasing trends. We’ve served multiple generations from the same families. Some of the children who once filled our programs now assist in leading them. That’s not coincidence. That’s trust, passed down.
This isn’t just a place. It’s a living legacy. When people return, they’re not just coming back. They’re adding another layer to the story. They’re helping hold up something they believe in. It’s hard to fake that kind of loyalty.
Still, we won’t romanticize this moment. Things are tight. The work hasn’t let up, but resources have. We’re present. We’re persevering. But keeping the doors open takes more than willpower.
Every chapter of this story has been written with care, with sacrifice, and with love. We’re proud of what we’ve built. But we’re not finished.
The next chapter hasn’t been written yet. Not without your help.
Your gift doesn’t just help to keep the program moving forward. It keeps kids learning, families supported, and a 45-year legacy alive. Whether you’ve known us for years or just found us today, your support makes a real difference.
