MISSION
Our mission is to improve and protect the quality of life of children, youth, and families in the Greater Greensboro community.
HISTORY
Founded in 1978 by Greensboro native, Sarah Walden Herbin, the Black Child Development Institute of Greensboro, Inc. is one of over 20 affiliates of the National Black Child Development Institute.
Upon founding BCDI-G, Ms. Herbin asked "Who if not us will advocate for our children", a call to action we have taken seriously for 37 years. Sarah's Story will provide more detailed information on what motivated our founder in her tireless efforts in the areas of civil rights and child advocacy. Our former Executive Director June Swanston~Valdes was also an integral part of the success of our organization. We encourage you to read June's Story to learn more about this community hero.
For 37 years, BCDI-G has been steadfast in fulfilling our mission by recruiting, screening, training, and mobilizing a cadre of volunteers who have served children in our community; providing them with low-cost one-on-one academic assistance, offering them opportunities for family enrichment, opening doors for access to community resources, and reigniting the spirit of volunteerism.
We invite you to "catch that spirit". Please go to our AmeriCorps page to learn how you can make a difference in our community through the Spirit of Excellence AmeriCorps Program, or visit our What We Offer pages to learn about our Spirit of Excellence Tutoring Program, as well as our other programs and events. Additional information on how you can help can be found on the pages beneath the heading Ways to Give, or you can contact us directly at (336) 230-2138 or by email at info@BlackChildDevelopment.org.
With your support, we will continue to make a difference in the lives of children, youth and families in the Greater Greensboro Community.
